New GOST standards for household appliances approved
Two standards for household appliances were published in August 2024. Below is a brief overview.
GOST IEC 60335-2-2-2024
By order of Rosstandart 986-st dated July 29, 2024, GOST IEC 60335-2-2-2024 “Household and similar electrical appliances. Safety. Part 2-2. Particular requirements for vacuum cleaners and water-suction cleaning devices” was approved. The standard comes into force on September 1, 2025, with the right of early application.
GOST IEC 60335-2-2-2024 establishes requirements recognized by the international community for the level of protection against such hazards as electrical, thermal, mechanical, fire and radiation effects of household electrical appliances during normal operation, taking into account the manufacturer’s instructions.
It also describes practical emergency situations; examines the influence of electromagnetic phenomena on the safe operation of electrical appliances.
GOST IEC 60335-2-2-2024 applies to the following household electrical appliances and their components:
– vacuum cleaners and water-suction cleaning appliances, including vacuum cleaners for animal care, with a rated voltage of not more than 250 V;
– central vacuum cleaners and automatic vacuum cleaners with battery power;
– electrically driven cleaning heads and current-carrying hoses connected to certain types of vacuum cleaners;
– battery-powered appliances and other appliances powered by direct current (DC).
It is important to consider: if the electrical appliance is not intended for household use, but may be a source of danger for users (for example, an appliance for use by non-specialists in a hotel), then it is also within the scope of GOST IEC 60335-2-2-2024.
GOST IEC 60335-2-9-2024
Order of Rosstandart 987-st dated July 29, 2024 approved GOST IEC 60335-2-9-2024 “Household and similar electrical appliances. Safety. Part 2-9. Particular requirements for grills, toasters and similar portable cooking appliances.” The standard comes into force on September 1, 2025 with the right of early application.
GOST IEC 60335-2-9-2024 is similar in purpose to GOST IEC 60335-2-2-2024 discussed above, but it establishes requirements for the level of protection for portable electrical appliances for household and similar purposes with a rated voltage of not more than 250 V, intended for cooking, such as:
– bread makers;
– contact grills (frying pans);
– stoves – kitchen, heating, induction heating such as wok;
– food dryers;
– ovens;
– roasters;
– toasters;
– shashlik makers;
– waffle irons.
The scope of the standard also includes electrical appliances for use by non-professionals in light industry, in shops and on farms. The requirements of GOST IEC 60335-2-9-2024 do not apply to devices used by professionals for the purpose of processing products for commercial consumption.
*Household appliances are subject to assessment of compliance with “electrical” technical regulations before being released into circulation – TR CU 004/2011 “On the safety of low-voltage equipment”, TR CU 020/2011 “Electromagnetic compatibility of technical equipment”. They may also be subject to the effect of Federal Law 126 “On Communications” and the permit procedure for import.
