State standards (GOSTs) for laptops approved

In early November 2024, Rosstandart approved standards establishing safety requirements and technical specifications for laptops. We are talking about national GOSTs: GOST R 71174-2024 “Laptops. Terms and definitions”; GOST R 71202-2024 “Laptops. Types, main parameters, general technical requirements”.

Such requirements are being introduced for the first time. Thus, the first standard now sets forth the following terminology: GOST R 71174-2024 clearly defines the concepts of a laptop, semi-portable, portable and mobile computers, docking stations, various types of keyboards and other terms.

Regarding safety requirements, GOST R 71202-2024 establishes the obligation to comply with the standards of GOST IEC 60950-1-2014 during assembly, maintenance, operation and repair.

In terms of electrical and mechanical safety, measures and classes of protection against electric shock, laptops must meet the requirements of GOST 25861-83. The standard also establishes technical specifications for built-in webcams, touchpads, and remote locking devices.

GOST R 71202-2024 also establishes the need to conduct tests for impact resistance, battery life, power consumption, dust and moisture protection and a number of other characteristics of laptops. Both standards will be put into effect on January 1, 2025.
