New Sportswear Standard GOST 32993–2024: Safety and Comfort Under Control
On March 23, 2026, information regarding the approval of a new sportswear standard was published on the Rosstandart website. In the light industry, product safety requirements, including clothing, are defined by the Customs Union Technical Regulation (TR CU 017/2011) and sanitary and hygienic standards. These regulations guarantee basic consumer protection by controlling the chemical and biological composition of materials. However, sportswear has special requirements. Designed for intensive use, it has high expectations for comfort, ergonomics, and durability. Until recently, the EAEU lacked a single, comprehensive standard regulating the quality of such products.
Following numerous requests from manufacturers, the interstate standard GOST 32993–2024 “Sportswear. General Specifications” was developed and approved. In Russia, it will become mandatory on November 30, 2026, but may be applied earlier. The document is valid throughout the union. The standard does not limit manufacturers’ creative freedom in design, style, and color, but establishes strict requirements for functionality and safety. Materials must comply with regulations and be selected based on the sport and climate, while general requirements for cut and seams are defined by current GOST standards.
Key parameters of the new GOST include: clear classification of products by layer (skin contact, base, protective), gender, and season; mandatory breathability of materials; control of electrostatic field levels; limitation of free formaldehyde content; requirements for color quality and color fastness. Particular attention is paid to the impact of clothing on the health of users. Incorrectly selected materials can impair heat exchange, causing overheating or hypothermia, while rough seams and fittings can lead to skin irritation. Insufficient product durability increases the risk of damage during exercise, which can lead to injury.
Thus, the introduction of GOST 32993–2024 is a significant step for the sportswear market. Consumers receive a guarantee of safety, and manufacturers receive clear guidelines for creating functional and reliable products.
